Trekking peaks

Among all of our high altitude treks, trekking peaks are the most special. If our trekking routes regularly reach 5000m without getting higher it is for a good reason. This is the altitude beyond which we enters a world of ice, rocks and snow. Where in the Alps, you are likely to walk on a glacier when over 3000m, it is possible in West China mountains to hike with no safety equipment up to the altitude of 5000m. Nevertheless, there are some summits which reach this mythical altitude that don't require any mountaineering skills to be climbed, and if you are fit enough, then it is possible to consider the ascent of a "5000". The high altitude of these peaks requires a few days of acclimatization that generally consists in a trekking route. In that case, we talk about a "trekking peak": a trekking route that ends with the ascent of a summit. There are numerous options in the west of China, below are two examples that should inspire you.

D1: Drive from Chengdu to the village of Rilong.

D2: Acclimatization day, easy hike in Changping or Shagqiao valley.

D3: Climb to base camp (4380m).

D4: Summit day, climb to the top of mount Dafeng (5025m), then climb down to Rilong.

D5: Drive back to Chengdu.

Closed to the outside world, China and its mountains were neglected for decades by mountaineers and climbers. Nepal, Pakistan or Ladakh in India still have today some solid assets to attract trekkers from all around the world. These destinations have welcomed foreigners for more than 30 years and logistic as well as hotel infrastructure has developed accordingly. There are also no communication problem since more and more locals developed their English skills welcoming more and more foreigners in the tourism industry.

But today, when Pakistan doesn't look like a safe destination anymore, when Nepal's routes become more and more crowded, the east of Himalaya and the Tibetan plateau seems to be one of the last "terra incognita". Indeed, no less than 350 peaks reaching 6000m altitude remain unclimbed in eastern Himalaya and Tibet... The majority of these mountains being in the autonomous province of Tibet, there are a lot of restrictions (not to say it is almost impossible) for foreigners to go there. But fortunately, some of these summits stand in the neighbor provinces of Qinghai and more especially in the ancient kingdom of Kham, in west Sichuan.
