TREK IN SICHUAN

sichuan map

Located on the East side of Tibet, Sichuan is a very densely populated province. Until 1997 and the creation of the municipalty-province of Chongqing, it was the most populated province of China. Nevertheless, Sichuan remains a very mountainous region stuck between the Tibetan plateau and the basin of Yangzi river where lives a huge majority of its inhabitants. About a third of the province actually lies in Tibetan areas with a very alpine terrain. Mount Minya Konka (Gongga shan in Mandarin) nicknamed "the king of Sichuan" indeed reaches the altitude of 7556m and was even once considered the highest mountain in the world! We are here in the land of the Khampas in the old Tibetan kingdom of Kham, the South-West part of the plateau.

Cultural and commercial exchanges between Chinese and Tibetans have always been closely related to the life of this province.

The first road linking Tibet to the rest of China was actually built from Chengdu, it is the famous "Sichuan-Tibet Highway".

But Sichuan is also the land of pandas, of Mount Emei, the giant Buddha in Leshan or spicy cuisine with its famous pepper. Between historical Tibet and traditional China, a trip to Sichuan is always a highlight.
